Muscat Blanc

Muscat Blanc à Petits Grains is one of the oldest grape varietals of Vitis vinifera still in cultivation. Historians have identified the grape as the Anathelicon moschaton used by the Ancient Greeks and Romans. It was probably first introduced to France by the Greeks through the trading port at Marseille and later spread to the Narbonne region by Romans in their conquest of Gaul. It was a chief export of Frontignan by the time of Charlemagne and plantings of Muscat Blanc were recorded in Germany by the 12th century. By the 16th century it had become a popular varietal in Alsace. Considering its age it shouldn't be surprising that this grape is also known by a multitude of other names, such as Moscato Bianco, Muscat d'Alsace, Muscat Canelli, Muscat (de) Frontignan, Muskateller, Muscatel de Grano Menudo, Moscatel Rosé and Sárgamuskotály.
