Chianti Classico

Toscana

When the Chianti appellation was expanded in 1932, producers in the original boundaries where allowed to call their wine Chianti Classico. When the DOC was created in the 1960's, Chianti Classico was one of the first appellations declared, on August 9th, 1967. Today it is found within the Italian provinces of Firenze and Siena. The wine is made with Sangiovese (75-100%), Canaiolo Nero (at most 10%), Trebbiano Toscano and Malvasia del Chianti (at most 6%), with the rest being other grapes grown in the appellation (at most 15%). At least 12% alcohol is required, or 12.5% plus two years aging to be Riserva.
